Live Streaming with DSLR Cameras
This past month we were asked to assist Lake Bible Church for the second year in a row with their annual Christmas Cooking show. This year we decided to up the ante and live stream and produce the cooking show in 1080 HD. We had some very interesting challenges in accomplishing this task, and in the process we learned virtually everything there is to know about HDMI cables. This was the 3rd time that SkEye Studios has done a live stream, and it was the first time that we attempted one in 1080 HD! Overall we were very pleased with the result. You can watch the video below. I will warn you that it is an hour long show, so you may not want to watch the whole thing 😉
If you are interested in what we used to accomplish this, here’s what we used:
- Blackmagic Television Studio
- Canon 5D Mk III
- GoPro Hero 3+: Black Edition
- Panasonic GH4
- Canon EOS 70D
- Sony Handycam HD
- Vizio 28″ Flat screen
- MacBook Pro
- 2 Cameramen (Chris Kiefer & Jacob Spence
- 1 Director (Anthony Johnson)
Here are some pictures of our set-up:

Great job guys! Quick question - how did you run the 5D mk iii to the Blackmagic TVS? We’re attempting a similar set-up right now with 4 Canon C300s going into the Blackmagic via SDI, but it’s refusing to play nice with our 5D’s HDMI output…
Ben,
We ran the 5D to the Blackmagic TVS with mini HDMI to HDMI 12′ cord. There’s obviously a lot of minor things and settings that we fiddled with to remove the camera data from the live stream.
let me know if there is something in particular that we could help you with.
